Rite Aid Corp. has purchased the U.S. operations of Jean Coutu Group Inc., a Canadian drugstore chain, for $3.4 billion in cash, stock and assumed debt. The transaction includes nearly 2,000 Brooks and Eckerd drugstores and six American distribution centers, and will make Rite Aid the largest drugstore chain operator on the East Coast. Also, IBM has acquired the software security adviser Internet Security Systems Inc. in an all-cash deal valued at $1.3 billion.
