MINEOLA – In a case of first impression, a District Court judge has clarified the reporting requirement of those with knowledge of residential oil spills in Nassau County.

Judge Scott Fairgrieve determined that individuals or companies that discover an oil spill in a Nassau County residence are required to report the spill to the County Fire Marshal. The judge’s decision in People v. Meenan Oil Co., 11919-01, rejected the defendant’s argument that such spills must be reported instead to the Nassau County Department of Health. (The decision was published in the Law Journal on May 3, p. 24, col. 5.)
