MINEOLA – Ruling on an issue the state appellate courts have only peripherally addressed, a judge has determined that Nassau County erred when it ruled that residences for pastors of a worldwide ministry were not entitled to a property tax break.
State Supreme Court Justice Peter B. Skelos annulled decisions by the Nassau County Department of Assessment and the Village of Freeport, which previously determined that properties used as residences for the Word of Life Ministries’ pastors did not qualify for tax exemption under state Real Property Tax Law (RPTL).
