The horror of Sept. 11th and its powerful images have marked our city and entire nation. We will never forget the airplanes, the firefighters, the mourners, posters of the missing, and the children. At first, we believed that there were unspeakable numbers of children orphaned.[1]

Later, news accounts clarified that this was not the case, but that far too many children had lost a parent or caretaker, some of whom presumably were single parents.[2] In these instances, if there is no other involved parent, these children will join many others already in need of a legal guardian or custodian in our New York City.
