The issue of mental health on the bench has been catapulted into a national discussion after the body of New York Court of Appeals Judge Sheila Abdus-Salaam was found Wednesday in the Hudson River.

Abdus-Salaam had been reported missing by her husband a day earlier, and police are investigating the 65-year-old’s death as a possible suicide. According to The New York Times, she had recently told friends and a doctor that she was under stress. And within the past five years, her mother and brother took their own lives, the Times reported, citing law enforcement officials.
