A Manhattan appeals court ruled Thursday that the city’s Civilian Complaint Review Board is not required to release a summary of prior complaints against the New York City police officer who in 2014 placed Eric Garner in a fatal chokehold.
Citing the potential for backlash against the officer, a unanimous panel of the Appellate Division, First Department, reversed Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Alice Schlesinger’s 2015 decision to grant the Legal Aid Society’s petition for a summary of substantiated complaints against Officer Daniel Pantaleo before his encounter with Garner.
