Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Tuesday that several attorneys were among more than two dozen newly appointed staff members to his administration.
Carolyn Pokorny was named chief special counsel for ethics, risk and compliance. She had been deputy chief of staff and counselor to U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch, and spent nearly 15 years with the Eastern District U.S. Attorney’s Office. She previously was a prosecutor in the Bronx District Attorney’s Office.
Joel Wertheimer was appointed as Cuomo’s staff secretary. He had been an associate staff secretary at the White House, where he coordinated and reviewed briefing materials sent to President Obama. Wertheimer previously was an associate at Winston & Strawn.
Rob Gibbon has been named assistant counsel to the governor for transportation. As a senior counsel in the state Senate, he was Home Rule and FOIL counsel and served as counsel to several committees. Prior to working for the Senate, he was assistant counsel to the New York State Association of Counties.
Jeffrey Pearlman will be acting director of the Authorities Budget Office. Pearlman has held numerous positions in state government, including as chief of staff and counsel for Lt. Gov. Kathy Hochul. He previously was of counsel at Greenberg Traurig.
Michael Volforte was named director of the Governor’s Office of Employee Relations (GOER), where he will oversee the executive branch’s relationship with public sector unions that represent state employees. Volforte has worked for GOER for more 20 years as associate director, deputy counsel and assistant counsel.
