Citing potential dangers to the safety of a transgender litigant seeking a name-change order, a Suffolk County judge waived a requirement that the litigant’s name be published.

The decision by Acting Suffolk County Supreme Court Justice James Hudson is the first published decision regarding the waiver of the publication requirement for a transgender individual since a 2015 change in New York’s civil rights law, said Noah Lewis, executive director of Transcend Legal in Jackson Heights, Queens, and the attorney for the litigant.
