As U.S. attorney for the Northern District of New York, Richard Hartunian is the federal government’s principal litigator in an area that encompasses 32 upstate counties and has 3.2 million people.

The office he runs files or responds to about 2,100 cases a year. It has 47 attorneys spread among locations in Albany, Syracuse, Binghamton and Plattsburgh. According to a U.S. government website, that qualifies as a “medium-sized” office.
