A plan to convert a landmarked clock tower in the TriBeCa section of Manhattan from mechanical to electric has been halted by a Manhattan judge, annulling a New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission decision to authorize the work.

The clock, which is situated in a suite of rooms called the Clocktower Suite and located atop the former New York Life Insurance Building at 346 Broadway, was constructed sometime between 1894 and 1898 at a time when most people did not have watches or clocks in their homes.
