A Manhattan judge ruled that two New York City police officers lawfully detained a non-English speaking public school student who left school and went home without permission after his teacher told him that he could not take part in a class field trip.

According to court papers, on June 1, 2011, the student, identified as W.C., was a fifth-grader attending P.S. 137 in Manhattan. He had been in the United States for about one year and depended on classmates and a teacher to help him translate English to his native Mandarin.
