A state judge has denied the request by a small college in the Adirondacks that it be released from the conditions of the will of a 20th century benefactor so that it can add the name of Joan Weill, a 21st century benefactor.

Paul Smith’s College sought to become known as “Joan Weill-Paul Smith’s College” in recognition of a $20 million naming gift that Weill, wife of former Citigroup CEO Sanford “Sandy” Weill, proposed giving to the college.
