Gov. Andrew Cuomo said he closed a potentially dangerous loophole in state law by signing into law a bill that extends orders of protection for victims of criminal sexual assault at least through the duration of their attackers’ terms of probation.

The change to Criminal Procedure Law §530.12 stipulates that protective orders extend for up to 10 years, the maximum for the duration of probation that can be imposed in felony sexual assaults, and for the maximum allowable period of probation in misdemeanor sex assaults, which is six years.
