A judge annulled a Long Island town zoning board’s ruling that plastic strips attached to utility poles, placed in order to create a symbolic boundary for certain members of the Jewish faith, run afoul of local sign rules.

Acting Suffolk County Supreme Court Justice Joseph Farneti said there was “no evidence” before the Town of Southampton Zoning Board of Appeals to show the strips, called “lechis,” were the sort of displays governed by the sign ordinance.
