Screening committees appointed by Gov. Andrew Cuomo are reviewing applications for the two presiding justice positions that will open on Dec. 31 with the mandatory retirements of Luis Gonzalez in the First Department and Henry Scudder in the Fourth Department.
The committees each set May 1 as the deadline to apply for the posts. Both Gonzalez, who hits the mandatory retirement age of 70 in October, and Scudder, who turned 70 in April, may remain on their appeals courts past Jan. 1 on a recertificated basis but cannot continue as presiding justices.
