John T. Casey, a justice on the Appellate Division, Third Department for 18 years in the 1980s and 1990s, died on Christmas Day at an Albany nursing home after a long battle with cancer. He was 93.

Casey was appointed to the Albany-based Third Department in December 1979 by then-governor Hugh Carey and served until his mandatory retirement at the end of 1997. He was certificated to remain on the court for three extra two-year terms until stepping down at age 76.
