Barry Kamins’ retirement as state Supreme Court justice shuts down proceedings by the Commission on Judicial Conduct that was investigating his improper political activities on behalf of former Brooklyn district attorney Charles Hynes.

Kamins said in a stipulation that he will retire Dec. 1, and the commission agreed to drop its investigation of whether he violated canons of judicial ethics through his behind-the-scenes role as advisor to the Hynes campaign in 2013 as detailed in a report by the New York City Department of Investigation (DOI) (NYLJ, June 3).
