The Appellate Division, First Department, has appointed labor and employment attorney Ernest Collazo to chair its Departmental Disciplinary Committee. Collazo took the position on Jan. 1.
Collazo, 64, is the managing partner of Collazo Florentino & Keil, a management-side labor and employment boutique firm. He was at Simpson Thacher & Bartlett from 1977 to 1991, first as an associate and then as a partner. Prior to that, he was a field attorney with the National Labor Relations Board from 1974 to 1977.
Collazo has been on the 75-member disciplinary committee since 2008, and a member of its 12-member policy committee since 2012.
As chairman, Collazo will appoint hearing panels to handle attorney disciplinary matters, review and sign petitions submitted by the committee to court, carry out various administrative functions and generally oversee the workings of the committee. He will work closely with the office of the committee’s chief counsel, Jorge Dopico, in handling disciplinary matters.
In addition to serving on the disciplinary committee, Collazo has been on the New York City Bar Association’s Committee on Professional and Judicial Ethics, and on the Public Advisory Council to the New York State Ethics Commission.
He also belongs to the Local Rules Advisory Committee of the Second Circuit Court of Appeals.
Collazo earned his J.D. from Columbia Law School in 1974 and his B.A. from Hunter College in 1971.
