The corruption retrial of former state Senate Majority Leader Joseph Bruno has been delayed until next year as the 84-year-old recovers from cancer surgery. On Thursday, Chief Northern District Judge Gary Sharpe (See Profile) stayed the Nov. 12 pretrial submission deadline in light of letters he received from the prosecution and defense regarding Bruno’s health.

Bruno, whose 2009 conviction on honest services mail fraud charges was reversed, was slated for retrial Dec. 2. However, Bruno is recovering from recent surgery to remove a cancerous tumor from his kidney and his physician anticipates a 90- to 120-day recovery.
