A civil rights attorney has been incarcerated for his “willful failure” to follow a bankruptcy judge’s order to pay almost $190,000 in debts, including a judgment arising from an employee’s discrimination action based on her pregnancy.

Eric Sanders of The Sanders Firm in Manhattan was taken into custody on Tuesday after Eastern District Bankruptcy Judge Dorothy Eisenberg, sitting in Central Islip, entered a civil contempt order against him. The Oct. 7 order, which slapped the attorney with $1,000 daily fines for failure to purge the contempt, arises from his failure to comply with an Aug. 16 turnover order in Chapter 7 liquidation proceedings, which Sanders initiated.
