In the face of judicial criticism, the state Board of Parole has agreed to provide a new hearing for an inmate serving time for murder who has been denied release seven times for a crime he committed in the mid 1970s.
The Attorney General’s Office on Friday advised Supreme Court Justice Richard Mott (See Profile) that it would not appeal his Sept. 27 ruling, but asked for a slight delay in providing the re-hearing the judge had ordered. Mott had directed the Parole Board to give Michael West a hearing by Oct. 7, but the state said it could not comply and asked for a two-day reprieve. Mott gave the state until Wednesday to conduct the hearing.
