Securities and Exchange Commission chair Mary Jo White touted her agency’s independence in Fordham Law School’s 14th annual A.A. Sommer Jr. Lecture on Oct. 3, addressing a crowd of students, professors and attorneys. White emphasized the importance of legislators and judges allowing the SEC “the freedom to do what it believes is right for investors and our markets,” implicitly criticizing parts of the Dodd-Frank Act, though she said she supported the law’s aims. She also defended the need for the SEC to enter into some settlements with no admission of wrongdoing. White, a former Southern District U.S. attorney and Debevoise & Plimpton partner, began her tenure as SEC chair in April.
