Nassau County Family Court supervising Judge Edmund Dane (See Profile) said one of the goals of his court is to reunite children with their parents as soon as it is safe following removal by the county's Social Services Department. But Dane is now paying special attention to children under age 5, diverting those cases to a fast track called "Babies Can't Wait" that increases judicial oversight for the court system's youngest and most vulnerable charges.
Nassau County's infant and toddler initiative, the most comprehensive in the state, officially launched in August after being in development for eight months. The program is a partnership between the court, the Nassau County Department of Social Services and Garden City-based Adelphi University's Institute for Parenting, a private organization that promotes strong parent-child relationships.
