A Florida man who admitted to his role in a plot to behead a federal judge and a prosecutor has been sentenced to 24 years and five years of supervised release. Southern District Judge John Keenan (See Profile) sentenced Dejvid Mirkovic Thursday, saying he had committed the "most serious type of crime because it strikes at the heart and soul of our judicial system."
Earlier this year, Mirkovic, 38, pleaded guilty to participating in a scheme to kill Eastern District Judge Joseph Bianco (See Profile) and Assistant U.S. Attorney Lara Gatz; Mirkovic acted as a middleman, relaying information and money from his incarcerated codefendant, Joseph Romano, to an undercover law enforcement agent posing as a hit man (NYLJ, March 14). Romano had been incarcerated after pleading guilty to a coin fraud scheme before Bianco, with Gatz acting as the lead prosecutor. Mirkovic was Romano's business associate and became involved first in the fraud scheme and then the murder plot, prosecutors said.
