Thomas Abt has been appointed Governor Andrew Cuomo's deputy secretary for public safety after serving the last four years as chief of staff at the Office of Justice Programs in the U.S. Department of Justice.

The deputy secretary supervises operations of the criminal justice-related agencies in state government, including the State Police, the Office of Homeland Security and the state prison, parole and probation systems. Abt will succeed Elizabeth Glazer, Cuomo's first deputy secretary for public safety, who left in June.
