James Catterson, the former Appellate Division, First Department, justice, has joined Kaye Scholer’s complex commercial litigation department as special counsel, the firm announced yesterday. "During his lengthy tenure as an appellate judge, Jim authored hundreds of judicial opinions on virtually every aspect of New York law, particularly complex commercial matters," James Herschlein, cochair of the complex commercial litigation department, said in a statement. "His energy and wealth of experience as both a judge and a litigator will be of great benefit to Kaye Scholer’s clients."

Catterson, 54, wrote more than 250 opinions and dissents and took part in over 6,000 appeals during his nine years at the First Department, which he left after losing reelection to the Supreme Court last fall. Previously, he was a New York Supreme Court Justice in the Tenth Judicial District. Before that, he was Suffolk County’s deputy county attorney. In that role, he litigated cases in both federal and state court.
