On behalf of the Queens County Bar Association, I join with our colleagues across the United States in celebrating this year’s Law Day. Queens County is the most ethnically diverse county in our nation, and arguably the world. Queens County is home for millions of immigrant families seeking to fulfill their dreams for the opportunities that our great county, state and country offer. This modern day Ellis Island is a testament to the pursuit of that dream, with the piers of yesteryear being replaced by the terminals of JFK. Queens County offers a refuge for our immigrants to realize their dreams of freedom and embrace the security of justice so eloquently articulated by the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. at the March on Washington five decades ago.

The dream proclaimed by King is strongly embodied in Queens County, America’s gateway to freedom. Tolerance and equality are well demonstrated by the multitude of cultures that reside within our borders. Hundreds of languages are spoken in Queens County, undominated by any particular ethnic group that has immigrated to our borough from every corner of the earth. A veritable mosaic of differences, each integral to the fabric of today’s society, is what makes us unique.
