President Dwight D. Eisenhower designated May 1 as Law Day, a day of national dedication to the principles of government under law. Eisenhower chose the date as a response to the May Day demonstrations in communist nations, calling upon Americans to "vigilantly guard the great heritage of liberty, justice and equality under law which our forefathers bequeathed to us."

The theme of Law Day 2013, "Realizing the Dream: Equality for All," is most appropriate. Equality for all is the foundation upon which this nation was built—an ideal Americans have strived for since our forefathers declared that "all men are created equal" in the preamble to the Declaration of Independence. Every president since Eisenhower has issued a proclamation on Law Day. Their words are worth recalling as we reflect on the theme of Law Day 2013.
