Students at the University at Buffalo Law School can now take part in a practicum focused on housing law, thanks to a $24,000 grant from the Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo.

The two-semester Healthy Homes Legal Practicum kicked off this fall, with eight students now working for improvements for city residents who live in unhealthy housing. They will be drafting proposed housing ordinances, working on Housing Court cases, and advocating for citizens at risk from home-based heath hazards such as lead, asbestos and mold.

The practicum will also provide legal support for the National Green and Healthy Homes Initiative, which picked Buffalo as one of 17 cities nationally where it is promoting safer housing.
