Shortly after Eastern District Judge Nicholas G. Garaufis (See Profile) yesterday issued a remedial order designed to remedy pervasive discrimination in the New York City Fire Department, the city appealed.

Objecting to the appointment of a court monitor who could be in place for a decade or more and is intended to ensure that the application, examination and post-examination hiring process are not skewed against blacks and Hispanics, attorneys with the New York City Law Department sought expedited review from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit.
