A federal judge has granted citizenship to a Vietnam War veteran who killed his wife more than 25 years ago but has since shown his “good moral character” by weaning himself from drug and alcohol addiction, becoming a counselor and earning his college degree while in prison.

Vernon Lawson “has redeemed himself, and the manner in which he has overcome his challenges is a testament to his character,” Judge Denny Chin wrote in Lawson v. United States Citizenship and Immigration Services, 09-cv-10195.
