As the afterglow lingered among the participants in New York’s first same-sex marriages, opponents yesterday went to court to force the invalidation of the long-awaited unions.

Officials said that 659 couples received licenses Sunday at the New York City clerk’s offices. Some left immediately for ceremonies they had arranged around town, but 484 couples were married on the spot by more than 80 judges who had volunteered for marriage duty on a day many described as historic.
