U.S. District Judge Christopher Droney of Connecticut faced few tough questions yesterday as senators considered his potential elevation to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. Judge Droney appeared before the Senate Judiciary Committee for his confirmation hearing, getting warm welcomes from his two Connecticut senators and the lone Republican in attendance, Senator Charles Grassley of Iowa. Mr. Grassley said that Judge Droney had “earned” high praise after serving as a federal judge for 14 years and, previously, as a U.S. attorney.
The reception was a contrast to the one received by U.S. District Judge Robert Chatigny of Connecticut, nominated last year for the same appellate seat as Judge Droney. Judge Chatigny’s nomination was killed in January amid vocal Republican opposition based on his handling of a death-penalty case.
