Deals attorney Matthew H. Kluger thought hard about how to foil any government investigation of his alleged insider trading, according to a criminal complaint filed last week in New Jersey.

Federal prosecutors have accused Mr. Kluger of trading on inside information about a dozen high-stakes deals that he obtained over the past 17 years as a lawyer for Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati; Cravath Swaine & Moore; and Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom. Over the last five years, Mr. Kluger’s tips allegedly helped codefendant Garrett Bauer earn more than $30 million on illegal trades (NYLJ, April 7).
