At one time, companies that offered their employees the opportunity to work from home were considered progressive or “cutting edge.” More recently, however, telecommuting has become the norm in many workplaces as a response to an increased need of workers to have more flexibility with their work schedules.

Telecommuting is working from a remote location, i.e., the worker’s personal residence, a customer location, a satellite office or an office center linked electronically with the employer’s central business operation. Some individuals who telecommute rarely report to a traditional office and instead work entirely from their homes, while others telecommute on a part-time or as-needed basis.
