The tax law contains numerous tax breaks that individuals can take advantage of to expand their knowledge and improve their work prospects. Some tax breaks have been created or expanded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (P.L. 111-4); others may be affected by pending legislation. Many breaks apply not only to individuals, but also for their spouse and dependents. Some breaks come into play when paying for education while others provide incentives to save for education.
In today’s economy, when some are struggling to pay for a child’s education or are pursuing courses that will lead to a new or better job position, it is important to understand which breaks can apply…and which may not.
