ALBANY – This week’s conviction of a former state Senate majority leader should focus the debate in Albany away from making changes only in the Commission on Public Integrity and into a broader discussion of ethical improvements by the Legislature, the commission’s leader said.
Michael Cherkasky maintained that while his commission has “warts” in how it punishes official misconduct among executive branch employees, former Senate Republican Leader Joseph L. Bruno’s fraud conviction and other recent cases involving improprieties by state lawmakers show a “complete lack of oversight” exists for legislators.
