Amid all the dialogue about the need for, lack of and possible cutbacks in financial support for providers of free civil legal services to the poor, one important fact seems to be falling between the cracks. The losers in an environment in which justice for all is becoming more of a distant dream than a way of life are not just poor individuals, seniors, people with a disability and battered women and children.

To paraphrase Walt Kelly’s famous line from the Pogo comic strip, “we have met the enemy and he is us,” we have identified the victims of cutbacks in support of legal aid and they are us.
