A defendant sentenced to 125 years to life after rejecting a 10-year-to-life plea deal has been granted a habeas corpus petition by a federal judge on the grounds of ineffective assistance of counsel.

Southern District Judge Shira Scheindlin found that the lawyer for the defendant, who was paralyzed during a 1991 shootout with police in the Bronx, failed to argue effectively that his client should take the 10-year plea offer.
