That buzzword “change” is everywhere. It defines our new President, our new year, and now, given your prestigious new position, it defines you. Let’s honor these changes with some grand flourishes, beginning with the celebration of your elevation. How about marking this red-letter occasion with a mind-opening journey (think: Easter Island, perhaps) that challenges your senses and could forever illuminate your world. Or perhaps a trip that introduces your family to a destination both festive and memorable. Or a romantic idyll that creates magic for you and your special someone. Although money is tighter this year, these celebration vacations come in at all price points. We’ve gathered some stellar suggestions that work for a variety of different budgets we’re calling The Splurge, The Mid-Range, and Affordable Solutions. You’ll notice that several of our Top Picks this year are in Chile, a wonderfully underexplored country brimming with truly great travel perks. Even in this economic crunch the U.S. dollar is pleasingly strong against the Chilean peso. A typical dinner for two will cost around $63 ($40,000 pesos). And if you pay your hotel charges with a U.S. dollar credit card, you’re exempt from the 19 percent VAT tax (called IVA in Chile). Another plus is that because Chile’s located in the southern Hemisphere it gives us the chance to enjoy summer in our winter (and, of course, amazing skiing during our summer), a staggering abundance of fresh fruits, vegetables and seafoods, not to mention world-class wines. Chileans warmly welcome Americans as VIP visitors and, because New York and Santiago are in the same time zone, you’ll travel without even a hint of jet lag.

Santiago has a variety of unique neighborhoods, excellent museums, a sleek subway system, world-class hotels, and–yes–graffiti. Chile’s remote Easter Island is home to Moai and herds of wild horses that roam its vast wildernesses. Beaches Resort in the Turks & Caicos islands is not only superlative and all-inclusive (i.e., good for family travel), but it is located on arguably the most beautiful 12-mile stretch of soft white sand in the entire Caribbean. An Alaska cruise for a family vacation? Sure, especially when it’s a luxury ship like Celebrity’s “Infinity.”
