Although four justices, in two separate concurring opinions, expressed strong reservations about the wisdom of New York state's 86-year-old convention system for nominating Supreme Court justices, the Court held that, while the system might be unfair, it is not unconstitutional. As Justice Antonin Scalia wrote in the majority opinion: "Party conventions, with their attendant 'smoke-filled rooms' and domination by party leaders, have long been an accepted manner of selecting party candidates."
