A star cooperating witness in a series of high-profile New York public corruption trials should be on the hook for more than $11.6 million in restitution, federal prosecutors and a victim entity urged the judge in charge of re-sentencing.
Jona Rechnitz was initially sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge Alvin Hellerstein of the Southern District of New York. Rechnitz pleaded guilty in 2016 to bribing former corrections union leader Norman Seabrook to invest union funds in the hedge fund Platinum Partners, which later collapsed.
