After U.S. Rep. George Santos was charged in a multicount federal indictment with fraud, theft, deceit, and money-laundering, the GOP House leadership stood by their man and refused to expel him from the lower chamber.

House Speaker U.S. Rep. Kevin McCarthy said he would only request Santos’ resignation if the latter were convicted because, “in America, you are presumed innocent until proven guilty.” And House Majority Leader U.S. Rep. Steve Scalise echoed that sentiment, refusing to rid the House of Santos until he is convicted because, “in America, there is a presumption of innocence.”
