The man who was convicted of driving a truck through bicyclists and bystanders on a bike path in lower Manhattan in October 2017, killing eight, will serve life in prison after jurors on Monday informed the court that they could not reach a unanimous decision on the death penalty.

Sayfullo Saipov, 34, was found guilty of all charges in January in the first phase of his trial before U.S. District Judge Vernon Broderick of the Southern District of New York. The same jury proceeded to consider whether to sentence Saipov to death, the first federal death penalty trial to take place under the administration of President Joe Biden.
