Practice Profile: Cheryl James is chief of staff to the chief legal and administrative officer at New York Life Insurance Company. She also leads the cybersecurity and privacy legal team which works collaboratively with New York Life business leaders and the technology and risk management teams to address privacy and cybersecurity legal and regulatory risk. Additionally, Cheryl leads the legal operations team responsible for managing the budget, administration, and overall operations of the office of the general counsel.

Leadership, Pro Bono and Civic Work: Cheryl maintains an active pro bono practice and is the chair of the New York Life Pro Bono Committee. She is a core leadership team member of the black employee resource group at New York Life and has served as a mentor for both the New York Life Empower Mentorship Program and the U.S. 30% Club Mission Gender Equity Mentoring Program. Cheryl also serves on the Advisory Board for the Door, a nonprofit whose mission is to empower young people to reach their potential by providing comprehensive development services in a diverse and caring environment. She is also an adjunct professor at Fordham Law School, where she teaches legal writing to first year law students.
