Large law firms in New York urgently sought last year to staff up, as demand skyrocketed in corporate matters and after conservative hiring in 2020. Even amid high attrition last year, most firms bulked up their New York ranks, resulting in big headcount increases at many firms.

The NYLJ 100 tracks the number of full-time equivalent lawyers in firms’ New York offices last year and ranks them by their headcounts in the state. In total, about 24,208 attorneys were working in the New York offices of the state’s 100 largest law firms last year, about a 2% net increase from the year before at these same firms.
