Crediting her for signing a number of reforms to state laws for civil practice, including legislation to end the state’s prohibition on admitting employees’ out-of-court statements, the New York State Trial Lawyers Association presented Gov. Kathy Hochul with its “Champion of Justice” award.

Since taking office, Hochul signed legislation that abolished the state’s ”speaking agents” requirement, which excluded from evidence statements by employees of companies or entities being sued that they did not have the express authority to make. The change brings New York’s civil practice rules in the line with 48 other states.
