Democratic lawmakers in Albany have introduced legislation that would require limited liability companies to disclose the names and addresses of their beneficial owners to the New York Department of State, in a measure that may help to uncover the assets of some international purchasers of New York City real estate.

The bill, its sponsors said in a statement Tuesday, aimed to impose transparency in the creation of LLCs, which have gained a reputation for keeping transactions off of the public radar since the disclosure of the Panama Papers in 2016.
