U.S. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer announced Wednesday that he had recommended a slate of three “progressive” women to serve as federal judges in New York, as a reshaping of the bench came into clearer focus.

The prospective nominees, Schumer said, have deep experience in civil rights, fair housing and criminal justice reform, and would bring “much-needed fresh perspective” to the U.S. District Courts for the Eastern and Southern Districts of New York, which have traditionally featured an outsized number of former prosecutors and corporate attorneys.
