A veteran Long Island-based criminal attorney was disbarred after failing to respond to five charges of professional misconduct, including allegations that he misappropriated and commingled funds entrusted to him as part of his law practice.

Donald Arthur Mates Jr. was disbarred by the Appellate Division, Second Department court in an opinion in which a five-justice panel wrote that the charges leveled by a state attorney grievance committee in a Nov. 13, 2020, petition are “deemed established” due to Mates’ lack of response to the charges.
